Signs Your Kids Might Have Vision Problems

Our kids don’t always tell us if their eyes are bothering them. We must pay close attention to what they do to know if there’s really a problem. Some signs are more noticeable than others, such as rubbing their eyes or squinting. Whenever you feel your child is having vision problems, it’s best to make an immediate appointment for an eye exam.

Child suffering from vision problems

Itchy, Irritated Eyes

Your child will probably be rubbing at their eyes if they’re irritated or itchy. Allergies commonly cause eyes to itch or become irritated. If your child is complaining of eye pain, it could be an indicator of a more serious problem.

Red/Pink Eyes

Viral infections such as Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye) will cause your child’s eyes to become pink or red. It will also be very itchy. Conjunctivitis is very contagious. It can affect one or both eyes. In most cases, eye drops will be needed to clear up the infection.

Squinting

Squinting can be a sign that your child may be sensitive to bright lights. Often, it can be a sign of more serious problems. Your child may be dealing with near-sightedness or far-sightedness. Strabismus may also cause squinting. If your child has trouble seeing things clearly, they will naturally squint to try and correct the problem.

Annual Eye Exams

An eye exam is recommended during your child’s preschool years. When your child starts school, it’s very important to have their eyes examined yearly. They will encounter infections such as Conjunctivitis more often. Normally when your child begins attending classes, you’ll see more noticeable signs if they have trouble in clearly seeing lessons written on a chalkboard.
