Diabetic Eye Exams with our Columbia Optometrist

diabetic eye exam

When you have diabetes, it can affect many different parts of your body, including your eyes. This disease puts you at risk of diabetic retinopathy, which can lead to permanent vision loss. At Dr. Dorothy Park & Associates in Columbia, we offer diabetic eye exams to reduce the risk of this happening.

Importance of Diabetic Eye Care

Since diabetes can put your vision at risk, especially if this disease is poorly managed, it is important to have regular eye care, including diabetic eye exams. These exams allow our eye doctor to find early signs of diabetic retinopathy or other problems with your vision. Retinopathy can occur due to high blood sugar levels, and it usually does not cause major symptoms in the early stages. You might only have mild problems with your vision at first, but this can grow worse and lead to blindness without proper care.

How Often to Have a Diabetic Eye Exam

You should have one of these exams at least every one or two years, although you might need them more often in some cases. Our optometrist might recommend more frequent exams if you have diabetes that is poorly managed or if you are showing early signs of vision problems.

What to Expect from Our Eye Doctor in Columbia

When you come in for diabetic eye exams, our eye doctor in Columbia will do a dilated retinal exam to check your eyes. This exam allows our optometrist to see the blood vessels in your eyes, as well as the back of your eye and your optic nerve. If you show any damage or other signs of diabetic retinopathy or other vision problems, our eye doctor will discuss your options and how to protect yourself from vision loss.
