Macular Degeneration

Macular Degeneration (AMD)

As people age, the retina in their eyes can begin to deteriorate. This causes a loss of vision, particularly in the center of the visual field. Peripheral vision remains intact, but with macular degeneration, it can be harder to see things like people's faces. Dr. Dorothy Park & Associates can help address any concerns you have with macular degeneration if you're in the Columbia, SC area. While macular degeneration isn't reversible, slowing down its progression is possible.

Macular Degeneration Treatments are Available

While macular degeneration is a serious issue, there are treatments available to reduce the impact it has on your life. There are also two types of this condition, dry AMD and wet AMD. Dry AMD is the most common, and it also progresses more slowly than wet AMD. If you have this type of macular degeneration, there are eye vitamins you can take and lifestyle adjustments you can make that will reduce the speed at which the condition progresses. For wet AMD there are fewer options, but there are still ways to preserve as much of your vision as possible.

Much of Your Vision Can be Preserved

When macular degeneration is in its early stages, the most important thing to do is monitor it. If your vision isn't changing quickly, you may not need to be too concerned about your condition. However, it's still important to remember that reversal of vision loss isn't possible, so you want to keep monitoring your vision carefully to ensure you start treating your AMD when necessary. Most intermediate levels of macular degeneration can be treated with eye vitamins and supplements.

You Don't Have to Settle for More Vision Loss

As soon as you experience any issues with your vision, work with your eye doctor to get the help and support you need. By reaching out to our doctor of optometry, you can find out what treatments and options are available to you. That way, you can get good advice right from the beginning, which can help you have more success in controlling and slowing the progression of your macular degeneration. While continued slow vision loss may be inevitable, the goal is to slow it as much as possible.
