If you're like most of our patients, even though you enjoy living in Columbia, the second-largest city in South Carolina, you like a bit of small-town up and close personal contact now and then. Our patients tell us that's what they like about getting their eyes examined at Dr. Dorothy Park & Associates. They appreciate how Dr. Park always takes time to sit down with them and answer all their questions, and many of those questions often include glaucoma. Perhaps you are concerned about glaucoma too. We will address some of those concerns and as always if you have any questions please feel free to contact us.
There is no minimum age for getting glaucoma. Primary congenital glaucoma (PCG) or childhood glaucoma usually manifests in a child by his or her first birthday. There is also no cap on the age a person can experience symptoms of glaucoma. Several studies have shown that not only are older people at greater risk for glaucoma, but they experience a more rapid rate of progression of both primary open-angle glaucoma and primary angle-closure glaucoma. These types of condition primarily affect those over 40. In fact, 17% of older people have some degree of the condition by the time they reach 70.
All three of these types of glaucoma, congenital juvenile glaucoma, primary open-angle glaucoma, and primary angle-closure glaucoma, affect the optic nerve and cause permanent damage and loss of vision over time.
Dr. Park likes nothing better than to take the time to get to know each patient and their concerns about eye health. So if you have questions, feel free to ask when you come in for an eye exam. Call Dr. Dorothy Park & Associates in Columbia at (803) 254-6306 and we'll make an appointment that fits your schedule.
