Macular Degeneration From Your Columbia Optometrist

An important part of our optometry practice is ensuring eye health throughout our patients’ lives. During your eye exams, your Columbia optometrist will provide a thorough inspection of the structures within the eyes to detect the small changes that can indicate the beginnings of eye diseases such as macular degeneration. Dr. Dorothy Park & Associates can provide the early treatment for these problems, to prevent vision loss that can occur.

Understanding Macular Degeneration

The “macula” is a part of the eye that is located in the center of the retina at the back of the eye. This area is filled with light-sensitive cells that help to focus images in the central field of vision. Age, heredity, smoking, high blood pressure and high cholesterol can cause these cells to deteriorate, causing a progressive loss of vision. In the early stages, individuals may not notice any symptoms, but as macular degeneration progresses, they may notice a blurry, dimmer portion in the center of the eyes that gets progressively larger and darker. The condition can lead to vision loss if not treated. Macular degeneration is generally an age-related condition, but in some cases, it can occur in younger people.

Treatment for Macular Degeneration

Although there is no cure for macular degeneration, early treatment can be critical for slowing the progress of the resulting vision loss. Eye experts recognize two forms of macular degeneration, the “wet” form, and the “dry” form. The “dry” form is more common and is generally treated with vitamin C and E supplements, as well as with compounds such as lutein and zeaxanthin. The “wet” form involves potential leaking from blood vessels and is usually treated with medications, laser therapy or surgery.
