Vision Conditions in Columbia, South Carolina

If you are suffering from vision conditions in Columbia we are here to assist you. As a prominent optometry provider Dr. Dorothy Park & Associates offers comprehensive eye care services. We offer a diagnosis and treatment for vision conditions including astigmatism and presbyopia.

What is Astigmatism?

Astigmatism is one of the most common vision conditions we treat here at Dr. Dorothy Park & Associates. It is caused by an irregular shape of the front cover of the eye, cornea, or lens, which almost every person has in some degree. For individuals who have an irregularity that causes blurred vision, this is known as astigmatism. Fortunately we can diagnose and successfully treat astigmatism here at your local eye care clinic.

How is Astigmatism Treated Using Orthokeratology?

Orthokeratology is a revolutionary way of treating astigmatism without eye surgery. Also known as ortho-k this procedure involves wearing gas permeable contact lenses overnight. The cornea is pressed into the proper shape so that you can see clearly by day. In fact, you won’t have to wear corrective lenses during the day. This procedure is ideal for individuals who cannot wear contacts or eyeglasses, or whom prefer not to. For example, it is well suited for children who are active in sports or adults whose occupation prevents them from wearing corrective eyewear.

What is Presbyopia?

As we age our eyes tend to lose functionality due to natural wear and tear, as well as age-related circumstances. Presbyopia is caused by a loss of flexibility in the eye, which is related to a loss of moisture that occurs naturally with the aging process. Unfortunately there is no cure for this vision condition, and it cannot be prevented. However, certain vision correction devices, such as prescription reading glasses, contact lenses, bifocals, and trifocals, can help compensate for vision loss due to presbyopia.

How Does My Columbia Optometrist Check for Vision Conditions?

Your Columbia optometrist uses a comprehensive eye exam to check for vision conditions, such as astigmatism or presbyopia. This exam typically includes any variation of visual acuity testing, keratometry measurements, and refraction testing. These techniques use sophisticated technology to evaluate the function and focus of the eye. Your eye doctor will also discuss your medical history and vision concerns to be able to make a complete diagnosis and plan for treatment for any vision conditions.
