Eye Exams in Columbia, SC

Do you get regular eye exams in Columbia, SC? If not, you should. Most people need to get an eye exam at least every two years, though once a year is generally recommended to keep on top of things regarding eye health. If you have a particular eye condition, or are at risk for one, getting an exam every six months is the best thing you can do for your eyes. Getting an eye exam is more than just seeing if you need lenses, and getting your prescription for them renewed. It is also important for a number of other reasons.

Why Eye Exams are an Important Part of Eye Care

When you visit our optometrist in Columbia, you will be evaluated for the clarity of your vision. If you need glasses or contact lenses, you will get your proper prescription at your exam, so you can see as clearly as you can with them. That is the basic part of the exam most people think of when they think of optometry. However, there is so much more.

Your eye exam will also take a look at the health of your eyes. You'll get a glaucoma test, which is important. Glaucoma usually doesn't have any symptoms, at least in the beginning. The sooner it is caught, the sooner you can start treating it, which gives you a better chance of protecting and preserving your vision.

You will get drops to dilate your eyes. This opens up the pupils so your optometrist can see inside your eye and look at what is going on in there. If you have any issues that aren't readily noticeable, they can be seen inside your eye. The beginnings of macular degeneration, tumors on the eye, the optic nerve, or in the brain can be seen through the pupils, and any degeneration of the eye itself will also be seen this way. Like with glaucoma, if you catch these things early, before symptoms begin, there is a degree of likelihood of being able to cure them, or at least prevent them from getting worse.

If there is an infection in one of your eyes and you haven't noticed it, your optometry exam will show it, and you can get antibiotic eye drops to cure it, and save your eyesight in that eye, or eyes.

One thing to remember is an eye exam doesn't hurt. Our Columbia eye doctor will use different lenses to evaluate your vision, and lights and drops to examine the health of your eyes. Even the glaucoma test, which used to be an issue for people who are sensitive to things touching their eye, no longer uses the probe that lightly rests on your eye's surface; most eye doctors simply use a puff of air on each eye to test for this condition.
