LASIK: What to Expect

When you’re tired of wearing eyeglasses or contacts for better vision, LASIK might offer a solution. This procedure can correct your vision, so you don’t have to depend on corrective lenses anymore. What should you expect if you plan on having this procedure done? At Dr. Dorothy Park and Associates, our eye doctor in Columbia, SC, offers the following information on LASIK.

How LASIK Is Done

LASIK involves reshaping your corneas to improve your vision. Our optometrist creates a small flap in the front part of your eye to access the cornea. After this is done, our eye doctor uses a laser to reshape your cornea. The flap is then put back in place so it can heal.

Good Candidates for LASIK

You’ll need to be a good candidate for this procedure, which involves going over your medical history and examining your eyes. If you have certain health conditions, eye diseases, or vision problems, our optometrist might not recommend LASIK due to the risks.

How to Prepare for LASIK

If you’re having this procedure done, make sure you have a ride home from our office. Don’t wear any eye makeup, and wear glasses instead of contact lenses a few weeks before your procedure.

What to Expect During and After LASIK

This procedure usually takes about a half-hour or less, depending on whether you have one or both eyes done. You might be asked to stare at a point of light to hold your eye still while your cornea is reshaped. After the procedure, you might have blurry vision, irritation, and watery eyes temporarily. You might need to cover your eyes with a shield while sleeping until they heal. It takes roughly a few months for your eyes to fully heal.
