Corneal Topography: What Your Eye Care Professional Wants You to Know

If you're dealing with keratoconus, a corneal condition that's often associated with certain genetic disorders, eye allergies, and excessive eye rubbing, it may help your condition to have your optometrist learn more about your condition using corneal topography. At Dr. Dorothy Park & Associates, our eye care team is here to help your eyes stay healthy for years to come. Here, we'll go over corneal topography, and what you can expect from your appointment.

What Is Corneal Topography?

The specialized corneal photography technique we use allows our eye doctor to fully understand what's happening on the surface of your cornea. Normally, the surface of the cornea is smooth, but this isn't the case for people who have scarring or distortions due to eye diseases like keratoconus.

Your eye doctor may want to perform topography as a part of your normal vision screening, or you may have the measurement procedure done as a part of a contact lens exam to allow your eye doctor to understand what type of contact lenses will be the best fit for you.

The procedure is not invasive. Nothing touches your eye during the scan, and you'll simply be asked to look at a target while your eye doctor takes a few photographs to capture a clear image your eye. Keeping up with regular topography appointments can help your doctor keep track of any changes happening within your eye, and can help with eye disease management, if necessary.
